1985: Under an Iron Sky – 4th Echelon

As the answer from People, Workers and Soldiers was enthusiastically positive, today we are officially announcing that the plans to mobilise a 4th Echelon for 1985: Under an Iron Sky have started!

Far from being a simple reprint, this new echelon will bring a lot of new and revised stuff. Here’s a partial, work-in-progress list.

Variable Reinforcement Schedule

The arrival date for most reinforcements will depend by the strategic decisions and by the allocation of limited airlift, sealift, and rail transport capacity. As in the previous echelons, the enemy has a vote too.

Tension Phase

No more pre-cooked surprise levels. Using a system similar to 1985: Sacred Oil, Warsaw Pact will execute mobilisation and preparation actions, possibly giving NATO the time to increase its readiness level or even start its own mobilisation.

Updated Rules

Rules updated with latest changes from 1985: Deadly Northern Lights and errata. Also, the rules and scenarios booklets will be printed in full colour, and updated to the now standard two-columns layout.

Updated Graphics

The graphics for the map, counters, and charts will be updated to the style used in 1985: Sacred Oil.

Geolocated Air Bases Map

New, big Geolocated Air Bases Map for NATO and Warsaw Pact, allowing a better control over the air war.

Updated Orders of Battle

The People’s Polish Air Force OOB will be updated using the latest discoveries made during the development of the C3 series.

The French Armed Forces OOB will be updated using the latest discoveries made during the development of the C3 series. The Force d’Action Rapide (Rapid Deployment Force) and the Air Force will be the most impacted.

Minor changes to several other OOBs.

Poster-Sized Cover Art

A poster-sized print of the box art will be included, perfect decoration for your nuclear shelter.

Field Manual

A Field Manual containing operational procedures and tactics will be included.

To Arms!

Comrades, the call to arms begins today! Enlist with pride at your nearest Red Army recruitment office, or send your declaration of loyalty to info@TRLGames.com.

Pledge your dedication to fight — and if need be, fall — for the glory of the Rodina!

  1. Please put me on the list

  2. Upgrade kit possibility?

    1. 90% of the components will be changed or updated…

      1. With this edition is it possible to solve the problem of counters that are difficult to detach with the risk of damaging them? Thank you

        1. They are not that bad, but we will try to improve 🙂

          1. I do agree that the first echelon counters were “not that bad.” Having said that, the nibs were quite wide and required a lot of effort to cut out cleanly for those of us, like me, who insists on cutting out counters with a good hobby blade. A new and better die would be very much appreciated rather than using the existing die from the the first echelon. Thanks! Thomas

    2. Fingers crossed

  3. Need to know price

    1. Probably the same of the last 1985 module (1985: deadly northern lights 2E), 165 euros

  4. Well done Fabrizio

  5. Well done Fabrizio

  6. I’m in…

  7. Please add me to the list as I’ve missed each other time!!! Thank you!!!

  8. Sign me up for 1985: Under an Iron Sky- 4th Echelon, please Fabrizio.

  9. Comrade Маркус reporting for duty.

  10. Thank goodness. I have been hoping this would happen. I am already on the mailing list- is there anything I need to do next to secure a copy when it is released?

    1. As stated by the “Mobilisation Plan” page:
“The People’s Secretariat For Statistical Analysis cannot accept generic, catch-all requests to reserve “every future game” as this defeats the primary, scientific reason of existence of the procedure: Counting how many people have a genuine Socialist enthusiasm for a specific upcoming operation, in order to commit the correct resources into it.”

in short yes, you have to send an email to Info@TRLGames.com and volunteer specifically for 1985:UAIS 4th echelon 🙂

      1. Thank you Fabrizio, I have resent my email to specifically enlist for the 4th echelon of 1985: UIS

        Thank you.

        Andrew

  11. Same question as Andrew above. I’m already enlisted for previous products, any need to re-enlist?

Really like the new cover art.

    1. Thanks! See above 🙂

  12. Sign me up comrade

  14. Mail sent. A copy for me. Please!

  15. Can you put me on the list for 1985 under the iron sky

  16. I have volunteered my service to the Party!!!

  17. Sign me up for 1985: Under an Iron Sky too;)
    Email sent

  18. Sign me up for a copy.

  19. Please add me

  20. Please add me to the list — this is a MUST BUY!

  21. Great news! I have responded to the call to arms and pledged my support under separate cover (email) as directed. We commend the committees decision to call for a 4th Echelon!

  22. Would it be possible to have the optional counters for Sacred Oil included in the 4th echelon reprint?

    1. Do you mean the 1985:Mutual Assured Destruction optional counters? It could be an idea if we find the space on the counter sheets.

      1. Yes, those are the counters I was thinking of.

  23. About the tension phase for this echelon: it implies any kind of upgrade pack for DNL 2nd echelon or the cards are the same from Sacred Oil for the 3 games? Thanks.

    1. It will be a different system.
Sacred Oil represents a full build-up period that could go on for weeks, with each side reacting to the enemy moves; In UAIS we will have a set of decisions taken by WP, with NATO possibly gaining a higher level of readiness before the offensive starts. As in Sacred Oil, nobody can be sure about what will exactly happen (There’s no “I’ll stop at 23 points of preparation so NATO will not mobilise the German Territorials”)

  24. Please add me to the list for one copy of Under an Iron Sky 4th Echelon. I will also send an email as requested.
Still hoping for a Balkan Front module… Even just maps and counters lol!

  25. Very much looking forward to this!

  26. Please add me to waiting list.

    Ken Portner (kennethportner@gmail.com)

    thanks.

  27. If I am not on list sign me up. One copy only.

  28. Good Morning (for me),

Can I confirm that this is an update/re-work of “The Next War” in terms of scope and playing style?

Also interested in an indicative cost for the “full” package.

    Regards,

    Mark

    1. The game is inspired by “The Next War”. You may find all the basic information on the official page of the third edition:
      https://trlgames.com/1985-under-an-iron-sky/

The fourth echelon will also add the most recent elements of the 1985 series, like event cards and Line of Communications map:
      https://trlgames.com/2025/01/24/1985-under-an-iron-sky-4th-echelon/

There is no “full” package or “upgrade” package. The indicative cost will be 165 euros, as for the other modules in the 1985 series.

      1. Thank you.

Given that the 3rd Edition is out of stock does the “4th echelon” (is that immersive marketing speak for 4th edition) replace the 3rd edition or do I need the 3rd edition to play the 4th echelon?

I guess I’m after a clear (non marketing structure).

        1. A copy of 1985: Under an Iron Sky 4th echelon is a complete game. You don’t need anything else 🙂

  29. hmm,

I posted a comment and then it disappeared. If the web site doesn’t work I hold little hope for the game.

    Regards,

    Mark

    1. The comments are moderated and need approval before appearing when posted by a new user.

      1. Ah. Thanks very much.

I’m happy to delete the complaining post if you tell me how.

        Regards,

        Mark

  30. Hi,

I understand there is a possibility that you might bring out a consolidated update of all three titles:

    Deadly Northern Lights
1985 Under an Iron Sky and
    Sacred Oil

I think rather than sign up for the 4th Echelon / Edition of 1985 Under an Iron Sky, I’d prefer to put my hand up as being very interested in the overall update/revision process.

That way I know that all three modules work together and share the same features, improvements, etc.

    Regards,

    Mark

  31. Tovaricht Plan Commissar, i’ll need a copy of UaIS to participate at Liberation War of the European People !
    Count me on.
    Spasiba
    Philippe

  32. I’m definitely in.

  33. I’m a completionist please sign me up

  34. I am hyped, please sign me up.

  35. As we get closer to commencement of operations I get increasingly unsure if I placed myself in the orders queue when this was announced earlier. Please consider adding something to our accounts that indicates if we have already volunteered to participate in a forthcoming operation. Positions in the operations fill up so quickly there is, or should be, a somewhat higher level of concern that an eager volunteer has done the right thing. Maybe I should start archiving more emails from Front HQ.

A less anxious comrade is a more focused comrade.

    1. Comrade,
you are in the volunteers’ list. A simple, quick method to verify if you are enrolled as cannon fodd…I mean first wave breaking the enemy lines is to search for an email with subject “1985:Under an Iron Sky 4th Echelon Enlisting”, or for an answer to your request coming from info@TRLGames.com.

      Strength through discipline and solidarity!

  36. Present for enlistment

  37. Sign me up!

  38. Sign me up please.

  39. I sent an email a few days ago asking to be put on the Under an Iron Sky and I usually receive a reply within a day, so I’m not sure if I screwed up the email address. Could you please add me to those signing up for duty. Thanks.

  40. Good afternoon, I got my copy of UAIS 4th Echelon which was deliveried yesterday. It looks great except I received two central maps and did not receive a southern map in the box. Everything else looks fine. Not clear where else to communicate this sort of issue.

    1. Got your email Larry, I’ll send you a replacement map tomorrow 🙂

  41. Will they ever be back in stock?

    1. On average, we have one reprint each year…The next one in list is The Dogs of War 🙂
