Wargaming Initiative NATO 2024

We are deeply honoured and incredibly proud to announce that Thin Red Line Games has been officially invited to the Wargaming Initiative NATO 2024, to be held in Hamburg under Bundeswehr patronage.

You will maybe remember that we attended NATO WIN23 in Rome last year in a less “official” role, so this is an important confirmation for all of us.

Following NATO guidelines for the event, Anthony Morphet and me will bring a specifically tailored 1985:Sacred Oil scenario. Anthony will take the umpire / national governments role, I will take command of the Soviet Union and Iraqi forces, while the NATO participants will lead a multi-national coalition facing a complex cold war crisis in an unfriendly or outright hostile strategic theatre.

There is no official NATO site yet, I will post more info as soon as they are available and unclassified. Also, we could possibly publish the scenario used after the conclusion of WIN24, of course should NATO agree with that.

What else could I say…..Time for multiple beers, and bombs away!

1985 Series: Logistics

Theatre Commander Fredrik Voss offers a second report on the 1985 Series, covering a topic every professional should know in detail: Logistics.

Does your Grand Master Plan include how to feed and supply your army? If that’s not the case, rest assured: Your name will gain a place of honour in the “Greatest Military Failures of the XX Century” list and, depending on your nationality, your next assignment will be a weather station in Greenland or a quick, final appearance in front of a military tribunal in Moscow.

For his commendable effort, Comrade Fredrik Voss will receive, at the victorious conclusion of the hostilities, an invitation to the private dacia of the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

Play? I Ain’t Got Time to Play.

BREAK BREAK BREAK

SITREP 20230705 1631ZT:

1. 1985:Under an Iron Sky resisted the enemy assault for 23 minutes, 1985:Sacred Oil heroically stood for 60 minutes. There are no survivors.
2. US POMCUS for Less Than 60 Miles 2nd Echelon has been overran.
3. The remaining copies of  Less Than 60 Miles 2nd Echelon will be shipped from FRANCE.

END

Since Thin Red Line Games started, I’ve had this insane habit to keep some copies in “strategic reserve” for any eventuality: SACEUR asking one to decorate his office, sudden collapse of the frontline, conventions….you never know!

This kind of behaviour has been sometime criticized, as just a few days after you’ve paid 400 bucks for a 1985:Under an Iron Sky copy on the private market, I suddenly announce that there’s “some reserve copies available”…Of course, at 4AM in your time zone.

In short, I’m a pain in the ass…and here’s another chance to prove it beyond any possible doubt! Sorry for that 🙂

I’ve finally realized that the time I can dedicate to conventions is very limited, so there’s no point in keeping several copies aside for similar events. Therefore, I’ve just committed the following to the FEBA:

1985: Deadly Northern Lights Upgrade Kit

This kit will allow AFNORTH and Baltic / North Sea Theatre Commanders to update 1985:DNL to the Second Echelon standards. It is unfortunately available in a very limited quantity!

SITREP UPDATE 20230202 1745ZT: Well, it survived 30 minutes. I’m sorry for the ridiculously fast sequence of events.

Please be aware that:

  1. it is practically a Second Echelon unboxed version; the only missing parts are the Task Forces and Air Combat charts already fielded during the first mobilisation.
  2. The equipment will be airlifted from France. Deployment to non-European fronts can be expensive (40+ Euros).

Report to the Quarter Master here!

1985:DNL First Echelon Upgrade Kit

In just three years, war has changed and become even more deadly.

Troops who started fighting the Scandinavian Campaign in the First Echelon can now increase their combat effectiveness by upgrading to the latest, more advanced equipment used by the Second Echelon forces.

NOTE: This is a free, downloadable Print-and-Play. You will need a good printer, some heavy photographic paper, and probably your local printing shop for the updated LOC map as it measures 100×60 cm.
