The Dogs of War – A Call to Arms

Since the mobilisation of the First Echelon in 2021, a steady stream of volunteers has continued to arrive at recruiting stations, all requesting deployment with a Second Echelon of The Dogs of War.

SHAPE Headquarters has therefore initiated contingency planning for a renewed operation. However, an initial force assessment has concluded that the combat power currently available remains below the critical threshold required to launch a successful offensive.

Accordingly, Commander-in-Chief BAOR, General Sir Nigel Bagnall, calls upon all personnel who have not yet enlisted to report without delay to the nearest recruiting office, or signal their intent by contacting info@TRLGames.com .

The strategic situation and force readiness levels will be reviewed again in 15 days. At that time, a final decision will be taken regarding the viability of the operation and the commitment of forces to the field.

UPDATE 202260616 0924ZT: The required critical threshold has been REACHED and the operation is CONFIRMED.
Volunteers are encouraged to continue enlisting in order to determine the amount of equipment that will be committed to the offensive.

The new echelon will have the following improvements (List still a work in progress):

  • Latest Rules version
  • Field Manual booklet
  • Full-colour printing of all booklets
  • Revised OOB including the (small) errata and any new findings
  • A new scenario
  • Poster for displaying in the War Room

SITREP

  1. Starting from 19850730 0002ZT, Warsaw Pact initiated nuclear strikes against AFCENT units.
  2. At 19850730 0105ZT, SACEUR authorized the use of nuclear weapons.
  3. An undetermined number of nuclear warheads in the 5 – 100 kt range have detonated in Central Europe.
  4. No reliable damage or losses assessments are available at the moment.
  5. At 19850730 0244ZT, NATO and Warsaw Pact announced an agreement for an immediate ceasefire has been reached.

MISSION

  1. Maintain current positions.
  2. Hostile actions against Warsaw Pact must cease immediately, except for responding an attack or stopping attempts to further advance into NATO territory.

OPERATIONS

  1. In a Dark Wood is officially out of stock! Once again, it was a short and bloody battle.
  2. Orders already received are safe from nuclear strikes and will reach the front ASAP.
  3. A small strategic reserve is available and will be used at SACEUR’s discretion.

  4. Nuclear weapons usage NOT authorized.

MISSION

  1. Proceed as for OPLAN 33001.
  2. Connect to the In a Dark Wood Equipment Page using encrypted communication.
  3. Draw the combat equipment.

COMMAND & SIGNAL

  1. Additional SIGINT and HUMINT at THIS SECURED CHANNEL. Ensure your communication equipment is turned ON.
  2. Unauthorized use of the above classified information will be prosecuted under Martial Law.

At 20241210 1002ZT SHAPE announced that:

1. Troop movement and rail traffic in DDR, Poland, Czechoslovakia compatible with a Warsaw Pact full mobilisation.

2. Intel assessment indicates a Warsaw Pact offensive in Central Europe within 10 days as PROBABLE.

3. DEFCON is raised to LEVEL 2, effective immediately.

Background

On June 8th, 1985 General Secretary of the Soviet Communist Party Mikhail Gorbachev is deposed by a military coup. A State of Emergency Committee, formed by Kremlin hardliners and presided by Andrei Gromyko, take power in Soviet Union.

Tension between the two Blocs increases sharply, reaching alarming levels after mass protests in several Warsaw Pact countries are suppressed by local Soviet forces. Interpreting these events as a covert attempt by capitalist forces to bring the Socialist System to its knees, the new Soviet Politburo decides to play all its remaining cards and starts mobilising Class II and III Divisions.

NATO diplomatic attempts to defuse the conflict receive reassuring answers about Soviet Union’s desire for peace, not supported by a change in Warsaw Pact’s troop movements.

In the end, the last supporters of the diplomatic approach surrender to the harsh reality when faced with dozens of satellite photos irrefutably showing Warsaw Pact Armies moving in attack formation toward the German Inner Border.

On July 23rd 1985 Transfer of Authority to NATO finally takes place, and SACEUR immediately issues a GENERAL ALERT order. A few hours later, Warsaw Pact divisions smash into NORTHAG covering forces.
